Power Chords (Free Tabs + Green Day + Gear Guide)

Today’s lesson focuses on power chords, also known as 5th chords. These chords are the most fundamental form of chord on the guitar. Understanding how to play them and when to use them is essential for any guitarist. Power chords are most commonly associated with punk and metal music, but they are also widely used in genres like blues and rock.

Power chords are made up of just two notes: the root note and the fifth. This simplicity gives them a strong, powerful sound. On the guitar, power chords can be played using just two or three fingers, making them relatively easy to learn, even for beginners. I’ve included a chart showing you how to play power chords starting on both the E string and the A string.

To hear power chords in action, listen to “When I Come Around” by Green Day. This song features classic power chord progressions that are both catchy and easy to play. Practice these chords and try incorporating them into your own playing. You’ll find that power chords can add a lot of energy and drive to your music.
